Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering

The University of Virginia is seeking PhD, MD, and MD-PhD applicants for Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). The candidate will exhibit high personal integrity and have experience in creating an educational and professional environment that stimulates creative thinking and collaboration at the boundaries of scientific knowledge and clinical application.
Competitive candidates will be internationally recognized for their scholarship and research in biomedical engineering. The position requires excellence in leadership, management, mentoring, and teaching commensurate with appointment to full Professor with tenure. Applications are encouraged from established Professors, senior Associate Professors and academically-oriented industry professionals. Not only does the Chair guide the vision for the department, but he/she also reports to the Deans of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and School of Medicine and participates in strategic planning and program development for both schools.
BME ranks in the top 15 programs in the U.S. and excels in the following areas: cardiovascular bioengineering, medical and molecular imaging, cellular and molecular bioengineering, regenerative medicine and biomaterials, musculoskeletal bioengineering, and computational systems bioengineering with emphasis on cardiovascular diseases, infectious disease, and cancer. The Department consists of 20 primary faculty and 20 secondary faculty members and occupies over 35,000 square feet of research and office space primarily in a contemporary research building completed in 2002, which is centrally located in the School of Medicine complex, and adjacent to a world-class Cardiovascular Research Center and Cancer Center. Current enrollees are 180 undergraduates and 95 doctoral students, including several MD-PhD students.
Charlottesville is a cosmopolitan city located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, two hours from Washington D.C., and three hours from the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic beaches.
